Chefs Under Fire Special Edition 2014 Citywide 86'd: an Austin competition where contestants competed in elimination rounds to become one of four contestants to go to the Finals, with the hopes of being named the ultimate champion.

Nicholson began his culinary career in high school where he worked at casual restaurants like diners and pizza places. After attending The Texas Culinary Academy, the Mississippi native took his skills to Enoteca and Vespaio for two years. Now a chef at Barley Swine, Nicholson notes that cooking has always given him the greatest joy and names Justine’s as his favorite restaurant.

After attending Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Ortiz has spent the past three years whipping up desserts at Uchi. Motivated by a lifelong passion for cooking and baking, Ortiz notes, “I'm inspired by the cooks and chefs that I work with, seeing their passion drives my passion as well as creativity.” She is also careful not to overlook salt, her favorite ingredient, as an important component in maintaining balance in desserts.

Originally from southern California, Murphy attended culinary school at Culinary Institute of America in Greystone. After school, he moved to San Francisco and worked at Jardiniere. Murphy then moved to Austin where he is currently Jr. Sous at Searsucker. Murphy loves being in the kitchen and making people happy with something he created. He cites the ocean as a source of inspiration, as it gives him ingredients & has taught him how to respect products.

Originally from Natick, Massachusetts, Ben attended culinary school at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts. He continued working in Cambridge at numerous restaurants, and soon made his way to San Sebastian, Spain where he cooked at Arzak. Ben is passionate about sharing the joy and emotion that encompasses food and is inspired by the talented people he works with at Uchiko. He loves working with local produce, game and exotic spices, and hopes to open his own restaurant someday.
