KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Let’s start talking #wine with Luisa Rocca from Bruno Rocca in #Babaresco #Italy on @keepercoll #WineWednesday #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: I’m so happy to have this opportunity and for me, being just a “country” girl on this high technology, I am very excited to be here on #SommChat today with all of you. Looking forward to your questions.

KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Luisa Rocca, is there a person you have admired throughout your career? If so, who and why? #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: My dad is who I have admired the most throughout my #wine career, I recall my dad when he began to be a #winemaker, that it was not cool, but was his passion. He invested everything he had to do this and get us where we are today, and always with a smile on his face! #SommChat

Sandy Wasserman CS @SandyWasserman: Good morning Luisa, @keepercoll who are your #wine mentors and how was the 2018 harvest in Barbaresco? #SommChat #harvest2018

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: The 2018 harvest was very good! We got just a small hailstorm in July on Nevibe property, but not any real damage. The vineyard of #Rabaja in #Barbaresco was amazing in 2018 - it is a great vintage for us. #SommChat

KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Question for #SommChat #Somm which vineyards do you produce #wine in? Are your wines made for drinking young or for aging or both Luisa?

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: We make two single vineyards which are #Rabaja and #Curra and bottled as single vineyard. We also have property in #Marcoryno San Criseforo and Fausauni that are used to make our entry level #Barbaresco. Each of these are vinified separately. #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: We make #wines that are approachable young, but can age so that the consumer and sommeliers can decide when they want to drink them. You have the best of both worlds with our wines! #SommChat

Sandy Wasserman CS @SandyWasserman: Question @keepercoll, Luisa what do you like to drink when not drinking Bruno Rocca and other #Barbaresco wines? Gratzie! #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: I love to drink #wine - I am a #winelover that likes to experiment with drinking lots of different wines from around the world. Normally, Ipick something which is 100% one varietal rather than a blend so that I can learn the essentials of that varietal. #SommChat

KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Question for #SommChat #Somm Luisa Rocca. What is the most challenging part of being Director of Marketing for Bruno Rocca?

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: At the beginning it was difficult to be young and a female trying to market the wines when I was only 20 years old and trying to sell in the #US! #SommChat

BeverageMattLev @BeverageLev: Were you or your father part of the Piemonte innovators of new aging approach to Nebbiolo, or are you old school?

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: When my father started in 1978 he was using the Barrique and still 40 years later (today) we use this. It is how you use the Barrique rather than the size of the barrels. This could be considered old school, but it is our old school approach. #SommChat

Drew Gourdie @drewbie_g: Not really a question … but, there are lots of great wineries in Italy that have no social media presence; it’s interesting that so many wine makers don’t see value in being on Instagram etc. Or maybe that’s changing?

Drew Gourdie @drewbie_g: I mention it because my first impulse is to always search Instagram and Twitter to learn more about a winery… for Italian wineries, that’s usually a dead end. As it was, for me searching Bruno Rocca this morning #SommChat

Drew Gourdie @drewbie_g: However, happy to report my search yielded a great YouTube interview with Luisa that is very informative! (And which I’m watching as I read the #SommChat thread

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: Most small wineries in Italy are really busy making their #wines and social media takes a lot of time to do correctly. They do not have time to do both and rather focus on making good #wine. #SommChat

Drew Gourdie @drewbie_g: Understood; making choices with limited time and resources is always important. You should consider working with a social media person who is passionate about your wine and flexible on compensation! (I have a cheese shop client who pays me in cheese, for example) #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: We are lucky to have some people like @keepercoll and Diane offer to feature us on social media like today on #SommChat

Keeper Collection @KeeperColl: Question for #SommChat #Somm how many different #wines do you make and which do you suggest are best for BTG program Luisa?

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: We make 11 different labels, 6 #Barbaresco and 1 langhe #nebbiolo and 1 #Chardonnay. For BTG it would be great to use the Dolcetto, Barbera, and Langhe Nebbiolo. I have some restaurants in #Italy using the Barbaresco by the glass as well. #SommChat

Sandy Wasserman CS @SandyWasserman: Question Luisa @keepercoll Can we expect new wines from Bruno Rocca in the near future? Experimenting with anything new? #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: We just released 3 new labels in the last 18 months, so no more new labels are planned now. One is #Barbaresco #curra, the second is #Barbaresco #reserva Curra and the last is #Barbaresco #reserva #Rabaja #SommChat

Keeper Collection @KeeperColl: Luisa Rocca, what are some of your favorite #wine and #food #pairings for the holidays? #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: I think there is an occasion and pairing for every wine. Traditionally, I love our #Barbaresco with a dark #Chocolate - I crave this. Roasted beef is a great pairing with #Barbaresco and with Barbara try a BBQ #Steak. Now I am very hungry. #SommChat

Keeper Collection @KeeperColl: Question for #SommChat #Somm what are your major mats in the #US and where would you like to grow Luisa?

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: I want to grow in #Illinois and #Colorado and the largest markets are #California, #NewYork, and #Texas. We tend to be more in restaurants, but ask your local retailer to try the #wines as well. #SommChat

Keeper Collection @KeeperColl: Question for #SommChat #Somm can you describe the tasting profiles of the #Barbaresco versus the #barbera vs the #dolcetto Luisa?

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: #Barbaresco has more complexity, higher tannins, with dark shades of fruits and some spiciness as well as some mint, depending on the subsoil. We also have tannins from tea leaves and flowers of violet and roses… #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: For our #Barbera D’alba it is lower on acidity and so it has more warmth and fat taste and more dark shades and spiciness, while the Barbere D’asti has a little higher acidity so it is very crispy and linear. All of this is due to the different soils as vilification is the same… #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: For Dolcetto, it was the water for my grandparents! It reminds you of the juice of grapes when you just press it! It has good complexity in the tannins, which gives it a good aftertaste. #SommChat

Keeper Collection @KeeperColl: Question for #SommChat #Somm how is it working in a family business and how do you work with your brother and what does he do?

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: It is good working in a family business and luckily my brother and I complement each other working in winery…#SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: My brother is the introvert loving to spend time with the plants in the vineyards and in the cellar, but does not like to talk with the customers, while I love to, rather than be quiet with the vines. #SommChat

Keeper Collection @KeeperColl: Question for #SommChat #Somm Luisa Rocca can you explain a little on the history of Bruno Rocca?

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: Much can be found on our website at https://www.brunorocca.it/en/. We have family history of being in the agricultural side of grape growing in #Barbaresco since at least 1834… #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: My dad was the 1st generation to start making #wine instead of just selling grapes and this began in 1978. He started with 2 labels then, #Dolcetto and #barbaresco #Rabaja. #SommChat

Keeper Collection @KeeperColl: Question for #SommChat #Somm do you ever work with your brother at harvest or only in marketing? AND has your brother made changes in the vineyard or cellar with weather changes?

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: Yes, when I am not traveling around the world marketing, I work harvest as I love it. The weather has changed which has resulted in evolution in the vineyard which we are following, but has not been major yet. #SommChat

Keeper Collection @KeeperColl: Question for #SommChat #Somm Luisa Rocca what is a day in your life working look like #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: When I am in the office, I go to the winery and welcome customers, review emails, or take calls to make sure all of the marketing efforts are going well… #SommChat

Luisa Rocca @KeeperColl: When I am traveling, I take care of my customers, taste, do master classes, or do #winemarker dinner whether it is the industry or consumers. That is my favorite part. #SommChat
