Keeper Collection @keepercoll: Don't forget that EVERY tweet during this chat should include the #SommChat hashtag in order for everyone to see it!
Keeper Collection @keepercoll: As we ask our Qs, you can ask Ashley your Qs as well! She'll do her best to answer all Qs in the order they come #SommChat
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: So great to be here today! Can't wait to answer some questions!
Ashely Hausman MW @ahausman14: Seeing a bit of growth that there are distinct microclimates. We have two AVAs-- in Grand Valley (around 4500 ft), Bdx varieties prominent, while in West Elks at over 6000 ft (!) Pinot, Riesling & other Alsace Var. do best #SommChat
Sandy Wasserman CS @SandyWasserman: Glad to be here....Much art? #sommchat
Keeper Collection @keepercoll: meant about
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: Yes! @mistralwine was founded on education-- a way to offer education both professional and consumer driven to Coloradans. I also contract for a couple distributors/importers through my business-- Old World Wine Co and Craft Wine Co. #SommChat
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: So in Grand Valley, we rely on the wind that blows through the canyon to help protect the vines from frost. Still, it can be unstoppable and there can be much loss in certain years. Many winemakers must keep spare canes on in the spring in case some are lost... #SommChat
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: Some varieties are better adapted than others (Cab Franc is doing quite well!). Overall yields can vary tremendously-- a big challenge. And there is much hybrid research going on at the moment. #SommChat
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: Definitely! Cab Franc is my favorite red variety from Colorado. @MCWineMaker makes some beauties. I also like ones from @BookCliff , @ColterrisWines , Carboy winery and @Infinite_Chimp #SommChat
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: I began with the @MasterSommUS through certified L2 in 09? Then I went on to do @WSETglobal through Diploma in 2014 to prepare for @mastersofwine. I tried to work in as many parts of the industry I could and travel at any opportunity. And so many books. So many. #SommChat
Courtney Quinn @Path2Wine: Q. Ashley, what are the top 3 wine regions would you recommend visiting? What books were dogeared the most? #sommchat
Ashely Hausman MW @ahausman14: My favorite regions have included: @ribeirasacrado, @piedmontwines and (I need 2!!!) Burgundy and Champagne. The latter two because I learn so much each time. The former two because I thought I may never come back. Recent trip to Willamette did the same to me. #SommChat
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: Books that got me started were any/every @JancisRobinson I could find! Especially Oxford Companion. Zraly helped me with my start. Love Neorogastronomy/enology. So many!!! Where do I start? scratching the surface #sommChat
The Vested Sommelier @vestedsommelier: Any sparkling wines out of Colorado we should keep an eye on? #SommChat
Keeper Collection @keepercoll: welcome back to #SommChat today - always appreciated your insightlful questions :)
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: You know-- I wish we did more!! I think it could really take off. There- my secret is out. ;) But I do think @Infinite_Chimp does a lovely trad method Bubbles Universe with Colorado grown Albarino. Delicious and so promising! #SommChat
The Vested Sommelier @vestedsommelier: I was hoping for some that High elevation Pinot Noir, & if yields vary a NV system could work. Here’s hoping!
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: I think some have come initially for lifestyle-some of the most beautiful vineyards in the world! While land less $, they are so hard to work, not super lucrative. I think it's the challenge-the pioneering spirit that draws people to understand this terroir. Figure it out.#Sommchat
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: @texsomiwa brings so many talented palates together in one room to judge thousands of international wines. I am honored to look at the roster and get the opportunity to learn from my colleagues and discuss the direction of wine regions and styles. #SommChat
Kathy Wiedermann @Virginia_Made: I’m doing great and you! Hope to keep popping in as time allows. #peskydayjob
Keeper Collection @keepercoll: Q fr #SommChat #Som @ahausman14 Do you have any favorite restaurants in #Colorado and how are #wine lists developing throughout the state? can you describe the colorado #Wine consumer & it is changing?
Ashely Hausman MW @ahausman14: I love @spuntinodenver, @BeckonCall, @hopalleydenver, @tavernettaden, Morin, Mercantile and old favorites like @Table6Denver. I think we are seeing more diversity of regions, natural wines, bubbles. Coloradans are def getting more global and adventurous! #SommChat
Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: By day, I represent two distribution companies selling high end French wine (Bouchard, Pernot, Prevost, Dutraive) and domestic (Walter Scott, Ceritas, Jolie Laide). Outside, I am always prepping educational events. I teach Enology for @msudenver. i write. #SommChat
