Ashely Hausman MW @ahausman14: Seeing a bit of growth that there are distinct microclimates. We have two AVAs-- in Grand Valley (around 4500 ft), Bdx varieties prominent, while in West Elks at over 6000 ft (!) Pinot, Riesling & other Alsace Var. do best #SommChat

Keeper Collection @keepercoll: @ahausman14 You formed Mistral Wine Co. in 2014, could you tell us a little about the business and how you got started in that? #SommChat

Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: Yes! @mistralwine was founded on education-- a way to offer education both professional and consumer driven to Coloradans. I also contract for a couple distributors/importers through my business-- Old World Wine Co and Craft Wine Co. #SommChat

Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: So in Grand Valley, we rely on the wind that blows through the canyon to help protect the vines from frost. Still, it can be unstoppable and there can be much loss in certain years. Many winemakers must keep spare canes on in the spring in case some are lost... #SommChat

Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: Some varieties are better adapted than others (Cab Franc is doing quite well!). Overall yields can vary tremendously-- a big challenge. And there is much hybrid research going on at the moment. #SommChat

Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: I began with the @MasterSommUS through certified L2 in 09? Then I went on to do @WSETglobal through Diploma in 2014 to prepare for @mastersofwine. I tried to work in as many parts of the industry I could and travel at any opportunity. And so many books. So many. #SommChat

Ashely Hausman MW @ahausman14: My favorite regions have included: @ribeirasacrado, @piedmontwines and (I need 2!!!) Burgundy and Champagne. The latter two because I learn so much each time. The former two because I thought I may never come back. Recent trip to Willamette did the same to me. #SommChat

Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: Books that got me started were any/every @JancisRobinson I could find! Especially Oxford Companion. Zraly helped me with my start. Love Neorogastronomy/enology. So many!!! Where do I start? scratching the surface #sommChat

Ashley Hausman MW @ahausman14: I think some have come initially for lifestyle-some of the most beautiful vineyards in the world!While land less $, they are so hard to work,not super lucrative. I think it's the challenge-the pioneering spirit that draws people to understand this terroir. Figure it out.#Sommchat

Ashely Hausman MW @ahausman14: I love @spuntinodenver, @BeckonCall, @hopalleydenver, @tavernettaden, Morin, Mercantile and old favorites like @Table6Denver. I think we are seeing more diversity of regions, natural wines, bubbles. Coloradans are def getting more global and adventurous! #SommChat
