KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Let's start talking #wine with Jean-Michel Cazes and his daughter Kinou from Lynch-Bages in #Bordeaux on @keepercoll #WineWednesday #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: I’m very glad to be in #Austin again and the beautiful Hill Country - it has changed a lot. So excited to experience #SommChat - this is new to me!
Kinou Cazes-Hachemian: I am thrilled to be in #Austin especially traveling with father for the first time in this area & feel privileged to be on #SommChat with my father today talking about #Lynch-Bages
KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Jean Michel-Cazes What are some of the major changes in #ChâteauLynch-Bages since your family acquired it? #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: The history of #wine has been ups and downs - my family started in 30s and it was a terrible time to be in #wine business. My Grandfather was able to buy #LynchBages because the owner then wanted & needed to sell & couldn’t find buyer... #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: At the time #winemaking techniques haven’t changed since 19th century and knowledge of enology was extremely limited and winery equipment had not been updated … #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: World War II did not help! In the 50s and 60s things started to change as people came with new knowledge and procedures in #Bordeaux and people became interest in exploring different #wines like #Bordeaux #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: Alexis Lichine born in Moscow, studied in Paris and living in US made a huge impact on #wine comprehension. The first author apt #wine and #spirits in the 50s and first to do blind tastings - #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: He was merchant and gathered 5-15 #Bordeaux #wines for professionals to taste and focused on quality of the #bordeaux rather the history and cost. This was a new approach RESULT opened new market in #US for fine wines exp bordeaux #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: This was very important because #LynchBages was tasted against other great #Bordeaux wines with mix of 1st 2nd 3rd etc growths and my grandfather would carry the results in his pocket as he traveled. #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: At same time technical knowledge in #Bordeaux improved due in Institute of Enology in the 60s. For the first time science in labs could be transferred to #vineyards. #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: Since Mkt got better, funds in 80s allowed to improved facilities that improved the #wines and #Bordeaux ppl invested which changed the region for the better forever #SommChat
KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Kinou Cazes-Hachemian, What’s it like representing #Lynch-Bages and your family’s #wines in North America? #SommChat
Kinou Cazes-Hachemian : Most of all it is great to be involved in a family business & honor for me to follow in the footsteps of my Great Grand Father, Grand Father, Father and to be the 4th generation. We love what we do & we love sharing what we do with people in #US... #SommChat
Kinou Cazes-Hachemian: If I can bring #lynch-Bages to the younger generation too discover #Bordeaux and our #wines, then I am fulfilled #SommChat
KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Question from #SommChat #Somm Jean-Michel-Cazes, Can you tell us about the 2017 vintage, outcome and production?
Jean Michel-Cazes: 2017 was a very difficult vintage for many #Bordeaux people because many were affected total production down 40% and not happened since 1991, which was worse. However some appellations were protected and in #Paulliac we were the lucky ones… #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: In 2017 #Paulliac #St Estephe and #stjulien on left bank of the Gironde River were protected by the big mass of water which was a temperature buffer. It was as atypical year. Quality for these 3 areas was excellent. #SommChat
KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Question from #SommChat #Somm Kinou, Can you tell us some of your favorite foods to eat with #Lynch-Bages? Do your preferences change when it is young versus older?
Kinou Cazes-Hachemian: Besides #wine, #cooking is a passion - I love to cook with old family recipes. Since our family is diverse, I like to cook from all of the different traditions and pair with our #Bordeaux #wines of #Lynch-Bages… #SommChat
Kinou Cazes-Hachemian: I have French recipes, MY mom is #portuguese and my husband is #persian so I use all of these to enjoy with our #wines #meats especially #lamb is traditional for #paullac and I do stews from my mom’s heritage… #SommChat
Kinou Cazes-Hachemian: and persian recipes from my husband’s family all go so well with #Lynch-Bages ! My father and I have even co-authored a #Cookbook I took care of the recipes in the books and my father covered the pairing and the history #SommChat
KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Where can we get the cookbook and what is it called? #SommChat
Kinou Cazes-Hachemian: The cookbook is called #Lynch-Bages & Co, A Family a #wine and 52 recipes and can be found @amazon #SommChat
KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Question from #SommChat : if you get to outside of the big metropolitan centres, do you find people open and willing to try BDX and the idea of traveling there? Merci.
Jean Michel-Cazes: YES, everybody we visit, even in smaller #US cities, we find are very interested in trying #Bordeaux #wines and the city of #Bordeaux has done a gr8 job to welcome visitors as we do #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: the City of #Bordeaux opened up the Cite du Vin to show #wines from not only #Bordeaux #wines but fr all over the world - not a museum but tasting and learning art history #Mustsee interactive #SommChat
KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Question from #SommChat: As a very well established family en Bordeaux, have you discovered any emerging wine regions that you are excited by the wines and the areas themselves? Merci!
Jean Michel-Cazes & Kinou Cazes-Hachemian: Besides #bordeaux we are active in #CDP as we love the area that is producing #wines with great personality and have vineyards in #languedoc which is great frontier and now #Portugal in upper Duoro… #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes & Kinou Cazes-Hachemian: The #wines in upper Duoro are not #port but red dry #wines that are great in quality and the area of the vineyards is absolutely stunning.. #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: I have had experience making #wine in #Australia #Hungary #Argentina #SouthAfrica and there are good #wines in many places in the world. The only place that I have not made #wine is #burgundy #GOALS #SommChat
KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Question from #SommChat #Somm JEAN-MICHEL CAZES are there any changes the #Lynch-Bages team is making in the vineyards and/or cellar due to climate change?
Jean Michel-Cazes: in #Bordeaux we do not feel that we have been as affected as others like #CDP. we are working on new ways of pruning the vines, new species to be resistant, etc. we know we need to be aware for the generations that follow me #SommChat
KeeperCollection @KeeperColl: Jean Michel-Cazes We saw an article that said you retired in 2006, but from all we see, you are not retired. It does not appear that you are retired from our standpoint - please explain. #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: I am retired from taking everyday decisions which is a big relief. My next Generation is doing great with taking #Lynch-bages forward. I get to do things I enjoy but my children have taken over the day-to-day items #SommChat
Jean Michel-Cazes: I’m very lucky to have good relationship with my children. My son has taken over N #Pauillac & Kinou N #US & #Bordeaux. We have family meetings every 3 months & we enjoy working together. I have 2 other daughters who are also interested N #lynchBages 1 is N #beijing right now #SommChat
