Bouilland, Bourgogne, France

Bienvenue à Bouilland! Bonjour! @jillzimorski here taking the mic. I’ll be spending the next week in Burgundy for the Bouilland Symposia — an immersive educational experience led by Jasper Morris MW & generously sponsored by Becky Wassterman & Co and TEXSOM. This opportunity is the result of winning the 2018 #SommsUF competition founded by the fairy godmother of wine in Texas, Diane Dixon @keepercoll. The week has barely begun & is already unforgettable. Follow along on the adventure via #sommtale or here @keepercoll.

Wine Tasting at the Bouilland Symposia

Day 1 at the Bouilland Symposia starting off with a tutored tasting on Burgundian Geology & the different types of soil with geologist Françoise Vannier-Petit. It rocks!

Tutored tasting of the Symposium

Beautiful lineup of 6 Pinot Noir from 6 Soils in the first tutored tasting of the Symposium.

Tour of Burgundy

The young-gun tour of Burgundy continues in Volnay with the beautiful wines of Thomas Bouley.

2. Thierry Pillot of Dom. Paul Pillot in Chassagne Montrachet

Good fences make for good neighbors. Mid-morning stroll down the Route des Grands Crus.

Gaaaahhhhh! Such an incredible visit with Sylvain Pataille in Marsannay! So great to spend time in his vineyards & then taste through 16 different wines/cuvées in the cellar. Video is Sylvain explaining a vine training method called marcottage (essentially a type of provignage). .

Who wouldn’t love a mystery blind while in the cellar of Michel Lafarge? Here’s the wine and the bottle from which it came. Guess the vintage...

Our visit to Bruno Clair in Marsannay was one of the most delicious, but also most entertaining visits of the trip — primarily because of the dynamic between Bruno, his son Edouard & his right-hand-man, Philippe Brun. One would opine, another would contradict, another would make a statement & so on...throughout 17 wines tasted in the cellar (plus 6 blind wines).

Tutored Tasting with Jasper Morris, MW: Three Ages of Wine. Three wines, three examples of each, vintages 5 years apart. Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault “Perriers” 1er Cru (2014/2009/2004); Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle Musigny (2012/2007/2002); Domaine Comte Armand Pommard “Clos des Epeneaux” 1er Cru (2015/2010/2005).

Love putting faces with names for wines I’ve loved. Dinner with Denis & Nicolas Bachelet was a special treat! And the wines...🙌🏻

Benjamin Leroux

Not exactly a new kid on the block, but in Beaune, that’s a relative term. Benjamin Leroux started making wine at Domaine du Comte Armand in 1999, but branched out to start his own label in 2007 (while still working at Comte Armand). Today he has a combination of domaine & negoc bottlings across an astounding 52 AOPs! He’s also incredibly talented, open & interesting vigneron with whom to spend a morning.

Prémeaux, Bourgogne, France

Still haven’t posted all the pictures I want to of my amazing internship in Burgundy, so I’ll resume with our visit with Frédéric Mugnier in the Clos de la Maréchale (& tasting of every vintage of it he’s vinified). This 9.76 hA walled vineyard is the largest monopole in Burgundy & the most southerly 1er Cru in the Cote de Nuits. It’s considered part of the Nuits-St.-Georges AOP, but technically lies in Premeaux-Prissey. A most incredible visit to wrap up the week.

Thanks Jill Zimorski for sharing your Burgundy #wine adventure so we all can learn about this wonderful wine-producing region.
